Department of Music

Department Information

The Music department at Mac offers band, choir, guitar, jazz, keyboard and strings for students in Grades 9 through 12. Performing ensembles have established a tradition of musical excellence. Music festival entries have resulted in three Provincial Kiwanis Invitation and two Provincial Champions (Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble). The Chamber Choir advanced to the quarter-finals of 2004 National CBC Competition for Amateur Choirs, Youth Choir Category. The Symphony Orchestra will perform at the showcase concert at this year's Ontario Music Educators' Association annual conference. A recipient of the Major Brian S. McCool Trophy in 2003, Macdonald was recognized as the top secondary school in the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival.

Relationships with the broader musical community

Macdonald enjoys an association with:
  1. The Elora Festival Singer and Dr. Noel Edison
  2. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra's Linda Melsted and Ivars Taurins
  3. The University of Toronto and Dr. Denise Grant
  4. Ohio State University and Professor Richard Blatti

Connections to our feeder schools

Macdonald maintains a connection with our closest feeder school, J.B. Tyrrell Sr. P.S. through teaching assistants, concerts, dances and an annual 3-day music camp. Macdonald's T.A. (teaching assistant) program offers small and large group tutoring to students at Macdonald, Tyrrell, Pleasant View and MacMillan.

Parental involvement and support

The TY-MAC Music Program (TY=Tyrrell and MAC=Macdonald) is supported by a hard working group of parents, the TY-MAC Music Parents' Association. New parents are always welcome at meetings held in the J.B. Tyrrell Library.
